Some 4x4s are built to look adventurous. The INEOS Grenadier Fieldmaster Edition was built for people who actually intend to go somewhere.

Finished in Blue, registered in April 2023 and having covered just 15,045 miles, this Grenadier Fieldmaster Edition 3.0 Petrol Automatic is available for £46,999.

At its heart is BMW’s formidable 3.0-litre B58 turbocharged straight-six petrol engine, producing 286 PS and 450 Nm, paired with a specially calibrated ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. It gives the Grenadier effortless strength on the road and the smooth, controllable power delivery you want when conditions become considerably more demanding.

But this isn’t an SUV with an off-road setting buried somewhere in a touchscreen.

The Grenadier uses permanent four-wheel drive, a lockable centre differential and a genuine two-speed transfer case with high and low range. Underneath is a full box-section ladder frame, heavy-duty coil suspension and Carraro solid beam axles front and rear, protected by front and rear skid plates. This is serious mechanical hardware, engineered for situations where traction and durability genuinely matter.

And that’s before you discover Off-Road Mode, Wading Mode, Pathfinder off-road navigation, a full-size spare wheel and towing capability of up to 3,500kg. INEOS subjected development Grenadiers to around 1.1 million miles of testing across 15 countries, because being tough wasn’t supposed to be a styling exercise.

The Fieldmaster Edition then adds the luxury.

Named after Belstaff’s iconic Fieldmaster jacket and created specifically for owners with an adventure lifestyle, it adds Safari Windows, leather upholstery, heated front seats, premium audio, alloy wheels, carpet mats and a compass with altimeter.

The standard Smooth Pack brings additional everyday convenience including a rear-view camera, front parking assistance, heated electrically adjustable mirrors, heated washer jets, lockable central storage, ambient lighting and additional charging points. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, RECARO seating and the Grenadier’s aircraft-inspired overhead control panel complete an interior that manages to feel both purposeful and special.

That is what makes the Fieldmaster such an appealing Grenadier.

It will climb, crawl, tow and explore with the same fundamental hardware that makes the Grenadier such a formidable 4x4, but when the track eventually turns back into tarmac, you have leather, heated seats, premium audio and the comfort to simply keep going.
