This is what happens when the spirit of the legendary Renault 5 is reimagined by Alpine, turned up to eleven and launched straight into the electric age.

The Alpine A290 GTS is not simply a small EV. It is a genuine modern hot hatch, developed around the same principles that made Alpine famous: performance, agility and driver involvement, but wrapped in something unmistakably futuristic.

Finished in White, registered in December 2025 and having covered just 4,103 miles, this example has had 2 owners, is not yet due its first scheduled service and is available for £29,999.

And because this is the GTS, you are looking at the flagship A290.

Its electric motor produces 220 hp and 300 Nm of torque, giving 0-62mph performance in around 6.4 seconds. But the numbers only tell part of the story. Alpine has engineered the A290 around steering feel, braking, chassis balance and response, so it behaves like a proper hot hatch rather than simply a quick electric car.

The 52kWh battery gives a WLTP range of up to around 236 miles, while 100kW rapid charging can take the battery from 15% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes, giving it genuine everyday usability alongside the performance.

Then there is the way it looks.

Wide arches, a low muscular stance, 19-inch wheels and that distinctive X-shaped lighting signature give the A290 a proper concept-car presence. The X motif itself nods back to the taped-up auxiliary lights seen on rally cars of old, blending retro motorsport influence with something almost cyberpunk in execution.

Inside, the same theme continues. The Alpine sports steering wheel incorporates dedicated controls inspired by motorsport, including the OV overtaking button, drive mode selector and regenerative braking controls, putting the important stuff directly at your fingertips.

And being the GTS, the cabin gets the premium treatment too, including Nappa leather and a high-end Devialet audio system, helping it feel as special inside as it looks outside.

It is still genuinely usable too.

Five seats. A 326-litre boot. Compact enough for the city, fast enough to entertain, comfortable enough for the daily commute and practical enough to use every day.

That is what makes the A290 GTS such an exciting car.

It takes everything we loved about the traditional petrol-head hot hatch, sharp responses, compact dimensions, attitude and personality, and reboots it for a completely different era.
